March Madness On Demand: You Gotta Be In It To Win It

Posted by Fritz Nelson, Mar 13, 2008 11:25 AM

There is absolutely nothing like March Madness to kick off the spring. Bubbles and brackets, vasectomies (I'll come back to that), 9:00 a.m.-until-God-only-knows-when because I've fallen into such a stupor that I start hearing Jim Nantz's voice in my dreams. Did I mention you don't need to miss a game? Oh, CBSsports.com. All the games. Online. Live. On Demand. Need I say more?

Over the next few weeks as the NCAA men's basketball tournament unfolds, starting with the bracket announcement this Sunday (March 16) and ending with the Final Four in San Antonio (April 5 to 7), InformationWeek will be uncovering some of the decisions and technology behind March Madness On Demand. We're also running our own tournament contest: the InformationWeek College Hoops Challenge, the winner of which will receive a 42-inch plasma TV Panasonic HDTV. For rules and directions on how to participate, go here.

The brackets and scoring come courtesy of CBS Sports and CBS Interactive. During the course of the tournment, we'll also have some fun with electronic polls and a bit of banter and coverage around the tournament.

For some insight into some of the technology behind the video delivery of March Madness On Demand, watch the video below -- our interview with CBS Interactive CTO Mark Kortekaas.

We also will be observing and commenting on some of the technology that has become such a prevalent part of sports, whether it's being used by college teams to recruit or by fans to get in-depth information on teams or even by reporters and analysts to stay connected and provide fresh insight. We managed to catch up with well-known CBS Sports analysts and announcers about how technology is changing the way sports is covered. Watch the video below for former Ohio State star and NBA player Clark "Special K" Kellogg's take.

Ah, the vasectomy thing. It seems that this is a popular time for that medical procedure. An excuse to stay immobile on the couch with nothing to do but watch basketball. Some of you may need to be reminded that this works only once. So just go sign up here, and hit the boss button if you need it.
