Google Docs Adds 'Save As PPT'

Posted by Eric Zeman, Apr 8, 2008 09:50 PM

Either Google read my harangue from a couple of weeks ago or this was already long in the works. You can now save Google Presentations as PowerPoint files. That's one more reason to give cloud computing a shot.

This functionality would have helped me greatly a couple of weeks ago when I was without a Windows machine and needed to save a presentation as a PowerPoint document. That aside, it's just one more increase in the functionality of Google Docs.

Andrew Chang, marketing manager with Google, wrote, "We believe you should be able to access your presentations however and whenever you want, in whatever format you need. In that vein, today we launched 'Save as PPT,' which allows you to save presentations as PowerPoint. We now support PDF, PPT, and basic text as export filetypes.

Of course, you can also share your presentations in several other ways: invite collaborators and viewers within Docs, publish your presentation (and share the unique URL to the presentation), or even embed your presentation on a separate website or blog."

Inviting collaborators is one of the biggest reasons I use Google Docs. The ability to press a couple of buttons and grant access to a file without actually having to send it anywhere is golden. It saves on the back-and-forth, and the multiple versions of the same file, which is something that drives me nuts.

Anyway, have at it, folks.
