Hands-Free Laws Don't Solve The Real Issue

In case you've been under a rock, California and Washington now have laws that make it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving unless you use a hands-free device. Obviously, the sentiment behind the laws is good -- I mean, everyone but me is a crazy driver -- but it seems like yet another toothless, unnecessary law.

I'll focus on the California law, as I live in the state, and we all know Californians have a slightly different outlook.

First of all, the $20 fine for a first offense will hardly cause cell phone junkies from kicking the habit. Sure, the fine goes up with subsequent offenses and court fees will tack on some more, but if they're trying to send a message, a hefty fine is necessary.

The main problem I have is that it seems like politicians just wanted to have another thing they can campaign on with this law. I don't think anyone is denying that people jabbering on their phones while driving represent a risk. But people will still be yapping, oblivious to what's on the road, except now they'll be doing it while looking like a BlueTool.

Additionally, police already had the authority to pull motorists over if their texting or calling is creating an unsafe driving situation. I'm a big believer in enforcing current laws correctly instead of piling new ones on.

But at least the legislatures got something right, as a second law also went into effect today banning minors from using a phone while driving. While it's true these kids can text faster than I can type, I don't believe they have enough wheel time under their belts to effectively drive and talk.

What do you think about the new laws? Are they a step in the right direction, or are they needless? Also, what hands-free solution will you use?
