Google Takes Your Mobile Phone To The Olympics

Just in time for today's opening ceremonies, Google has unfurled a new mobile search tool to help track down Olympics results quickly from your mobile phone. It also set up a mobile Web site specifically so followers of the games can peruse results and events at leisure. Let the Games begin!

I really enjoy the Olympic Games. Watching the world's best athletes compete for the gold is always thrilling (especially since I competed in track and field events when I was in high school). The Internet will surely be a great tool to use to keep track of my favorite events. Google has decided to extend the power of its search engines and create specific Olympic-based tools for Internet-capable mobile phones.

According to the Official Google Mobile Blog, Google has "launched a new mobile search tool that gets you sport results, country medal count, and event schedules right at the top of your search results."

What it is doing is parsing search results based on your search term and placing any results that are specific to the Olympics at the top of your results. So, for example, if you search for "Swimming," Google will show the results for the Olympics first, and then what would normally have appeared for such a search. Google continues, "Once the events have begun, you'll be able to search for things like 'gymnastics medals' or 'Russia medal count' to get updated medal counts and rankings in your search results."

Lastly, Google has created a mobile-specific Web site where it will tally everything about the Olympic Games. You can go to the site (Google's Mobile Olympic Site) and browse through all the events and results. Google says this Web site will be available in 36 different languages and can be viewed in 60 different countries.
