Obama To Announce VP Through Text

Posted by Marin Perez, Aug 11, 2008 12:35 PM

With the presidential election less than three months away, the missing piece of the puzzle is who will be the vice presidential nominees. Barack Obama recently said he'll be announcing his nominee in a way that might make some say OMG!

Obama will name his vice-presidential candidate through text and e-mail. A text to supporters read:

Barack will announce his VP candidate choice through txt msg between now & the Conv. Tell everyone to text VP to 62262 to be the first to know!

This move will definitely get more registered cell phone numbers and e-mails that can be used as a valuable fund-raising tool. Additionally, it reinforces Obama's tech-savvy persona -- or at least the perception that he is more tech-proficient than his opponent.

Leaving the politics out of this one, what do you guys think of a major announcement via text? Is it a smart way to gain more supporter's cell phone numbers and e-mails, or does it seem like a slick gimmick?

I'm leaning a bit toward the gimmick side only because I believe this type of announcement is big enough to warrant the traditional trappings (press conference, etc.) with simultaneous mobile and Web announcements.
