New HTC Touch HD Has Massive Display, 5 Megapixel Camera

The latest in the ever-expanding lineup of touch-based smartphones from the Taiwanese device maker sports a 3.8-inch wide-screen VGA display and a 5 megapixel camera. About its only flaw is that it doesn't support U.S. 3G networks.

If you're looking for maximum screen size, look no further than the new Touch HD. The 3.8-inch screen is gorgeous, and spans 480 by 800 pixels, making it a WVGA monster. It is perfect for watching movies, and, er, getting lots of work done. I had a chance to see the Touch HD at last week's CTIA conference, and I must that that the screen beats most others on the market. It looks phenomenal.

"Today, widescreen TV, Internet and video have become the standard so there is no reason to compromise when you leave the house, the Touch HD delivers that uncompromising multimedia and Internet experience," said Peter Chou, president and CEO HTC Corporation in a prepared statement. "We are living in a time where the concept of entertainment has radically changed. The internet is so much more than just email and our customers expect to be able to access the Internet and high quality multimedia content no matter where they are in the world."

Other media-friendly features include an iPhone-killing 5 megapixel shooter with autofocus. That means you can truly use the Touch HD to supplant your stand-alone camera. The Touch HD has a 3.5mm headset jack, which means you can use regular stereo headphones during media playback.

As for connectivity, it has a quad-band GSM/EDGE radio that can roam the world over. It may pack in blistering 7.2Mbps HSDPA 3G, but it only supports European 3G networks. It also has integrated GPS, stereo Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The Touch HD comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and HTC's 3d TouchFLO user interface. It supports microSDHC cards in the card slot and has a full HTML Web browser.

It will be available in select markets in the fourth quarter. Pricing information was not provided.
