Touch Screen Roundup
While most of the excitement this week has centered around T-Mobile's Android-powered G1, there were some interesting developments on the touch-screen front from Nokia and Research In Motion. Spies were able to snag some details on the first touch-screen BlackBerry, and the first shots of Nokia's "Tube" smartphone found their way to the Web.While most of the excitement this week has centered around T-Mobile's Android-powered G1, there were some interesting developments on the touch-screen front from Nokia and Research In Motion. Spies were able to snag some details on the first touch-screen BlackBerry, and the first shots of Nokia's "Tube" smartphone found their way to the Web.The BlackBerry Storm, which already is being badmouthed by AT&T, hasn't even been officially announced but Engadget got its hands on some internal selling points (or 'WOW factors').
The Storm, which is coming to Verizon Wireless, will be a global phone, with multiple EDGE, HSDPA, and CDMA radios. The screen will be 3.25-inches, and sport a 480-by-360 resolution with haptic feedback and accelerometers. A 3.2-megapixel camera with flash is on board, and you'll be able to expand the memory up to 8 GB via the microSD slot. There's going to be assisted-GPS (although it's unknown if this will be locked down), but, sadly, no Wi-Fi.

Of course, this device will live and die with how good the keyboard is, and at least one report said it's weak. No word on launch, or pricing, but I'll keep hounding RIM for some more info.
As for Nokia, rumors are percolating that it will introduce its touch-screen "Tube" smartphone next Thursday. These rumors were seemingly backed up when an official-looking press shot leaked into the wild.
Nokia's mum, of course, but CraveUk is reporting the handset will have a 3.2-inch touch screen with 640-by-480 resolution. There also will be Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, and 3G capabilities. Naturally, the handset will run Series 60 Symbian OS.
It's an exciting time if you dig touch screens, and I'll be sure to keep you informed if any of these are worth it.
