Samsung Adds Its Omnia To Verizon's Smartphone Lineup

With just three days before Black Friday, the phone manufacturers and network operators are rolling out the new phones in furious fashion. The latest? Samsung and Verizon Wireless jointly announced the Omnia, Samsung's Windows Mobile 6.1-wielding, TouchWiz-toting, touch screen titan.

The Omnia was first revealed by Samsung back in June, and the version if showed off then was a GSM-based device. Looks like the phone has had a make-over since then, because this version is for Verizon's EVDO 3G network.

The Omnia has Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, which supports full finger-touch input. But in a move to make it more user friendly, Samsung has placed its TouchWiz user interface (recently seen on the Delve and Behold) on the Omnia. TouchWiz features a dock with widgets that can be dragged to/from the desktop. It lets users customize how the phone looks and works.

User interface aside, the Omnia boasts some impressive specs.

It has a 5-megapixel camera with zoom, flash, and video capture. There is some great software on board for the camera. It has face detection, geo-tagging, panorama mode, and smile shot, which enables the camera to detect when a person is smiling and automatically take a picture.

In addition to 3G, it also has Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, and GPS. This means you always have access to fast Internet, wireless music, and navigation services.

It comes with a full HTML browser, support for Microsoft's ActiveSync for e-mail, calendar and contacts syncing, and access to multiple e-mail accounts with Microsoft Direct Push for corporate users.

The Omnia will be available via Verizon's business sales channels starting Nov. 26, but it won't appear in Verizon Wireless retail stores until Dec. 8. It will set you back $250 after rebates with a new two-year agreement.
