VM’ing Phones?
VMware is leveraging tech from the Trango Virtual Processors acquisition last month as an entry into the mobile market. The hope is to bring the same abstraction benefits seen in the x86 world -- rapid development, test, and hardware independence thanks to virtualization -- to the mobile phone market. The initiative is branded the VMware Mobile Virtualization Platform. The benefit to developers and vendors is streamlined creation of product; the potential benefit to organizations and users is comparable with virtualized desktop/laptop computing environments -- flexibility in app deployment and multiple machine personalities for work or personal use. This initiative makes sense, and should generate an additional revenue stream for VMware to help offset competition in the x86 virt market.
