Gilbane CMS Conference Highlights

It's usually no fun hearing about a party you weren't able to make it to, and while I wasn't at the Gilbane Content Management Conference in Boston last week, a number of highlights caught my attention.

It's usually no fun hearing about a party you weren't able to make it to, and while I wasn't at the Gilbane Content Management Conference in Boston last week, a number of highlights caught my attention.The overarching theme of this conference was "Where Content Management Meets Social Media," and the list of speakers and topics was impressive. While most of the presentations haven't yet been publicly released (and ultimately may not be), a few interesting tidbits have been made available.

Seth Gottlieb, whose Enter Content Here blog is a consistently a good read, presented a session on how to select a content management system. While just reviewing the slides for presentation doesn't give you the full experience, there's a lot of valuable information here.

Kathleen Reidy, a senior analyst at the 451 Group and a panelist in one of the sessions, posted an interesting piece on what happens when the lines between content management and social media blur:

"...lumping all kinds of social technologies under a "social media" banner causes too much confusion for everyone involved. (The social media) panel really highlighted this as the conversation veered widely between internal collaboration goals, issues, and technologies, and using social technologies to market to and serve customers online."

One lowlight? The CEO from one vendor apparently demoed their content management system by showing off the work they've done for Playboy.com. The demo went over about as well as you'd expect, and the CEO has since apologized. And who says conferences can be boring?
