Apple Patches QuickTime Flaws

Posted by Thomas Claburn, Jan 21, 2009 07:28 PM

Apple on Wednesday released QuickTime 7.6, a new version of its multimedia software that improves quality, compatibility, and security.

QuickTime 7.6, available for Mac OX X Leopard, Mac OS X Tiger, and Windows, includes improvements in H.264 encoding quality, Motion JPEG playback reliability, AAC encoding fidelity, MPEG video file audio track exporting, and compatibility with iChat and Photo Booth.

More significantly, the update fixes seven critical QuickTime security vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities mostly have to do with maliciously crafted movie files and URLS.

Given that malware authors have made a habit of enticing people to view malicious video files, this would be a good update to install as soon as possible.

Further details can be found at Apple's Web site.
