Motorola Confirms Windows Mobile 7 Efforts In 2010

Motorola has confirmed that it will participate in the Windows Mobile 7 area in 2010, but it will focus on Android for the time being.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha spoke at the earnings conference call earlier today. "As you know, Windows 6 series is available in 2009 and as compared to Android, we believe in 2009 Android is more competitive; more of our effort and focus in 2009 is going to Android, but in 2010 when Windows 7 will become available, we will then participate in a more focused way in Windows Mobile 7 in 2010."

Microsoft tries to keep a lid on Windows Mobile releases until the operating system is ready to go and carriers are nearly ready to sell it because leaks like this can cause the sales of existing devices to dry up while people wait for the latest and greatest. At this point, Windows Mobile 6.5 hasn't even been announced, though that is widely rumored to happen next week at Mobile World Congress.

Clearly, in releasing this information Jha is trying to keep Motorola in the minds of consumers and enthusiasts that keep up with gadget news. Motorola hasn't had a really exciting device since the Razr. Jha also mentioned that Motorola will be content to launch fewer devices, but of those it does sell, they will be higher-end phones (that means fatter margins) and some will run Android.

Let's hope this announcement will be followed with devices in a very short time frame. If Motorola has just started its device development, it could be several quarters before anything makes its way to the consumer's hands.
