What Better Use For An iPhone But To Drive A Car With It?

This week at the Geneva Motor Show, a Swiss company called Rinspeed will show off a new concept car that can be driven with an iPhone. James Bond, look out.I admit, I am a fan of James Bond movies. One of my all-time favorite sequences in the entire range of Bond films is the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where James uses a touch-based cell phone (a Sony Ericsson, I believe), to drive a BMW 7 Series sedan around a parking garage from the back seat. Not only does he drive the car, he accesses its full array of Q-installed defenses, including machine guns, missiles, caltrops, and a smoke screen. Speaking of smoke...

Rinspeed is bringing this vision to reality. Sort of.

The iChange won't let you steer the car with an iPhone, but you can start the engine, turn on/off the headlights, map GPS-based routes, and perform other functions that are normally taken care of through controls on the dashboard.

What's more interesting than tossing off some of the car's functions to an iPhone is the shape-changing nature of the iChange. According to IDG, the iChange is meant to take somewhat different shapes depending on how many passengers are inside, so it can optimize aerodynamics. IDG reports, "In its basic configuration the pod-shaped sports car is a single seater but at the push of a button the rear of the roof pops up to provide room for an extra two passengers. The adaptive body concept is perhaps the biggest innovation in the car."

The iChange also carries a Harmon Kardon audio system that uses Intel processors, a configurable array, lithium ion batteries, and a zero to 60 acceleration time of 4.2 seconds.

These are some interesting concepts, for sure. If I were you, though, I wouldn't expect to see too many iPhone-controlled cars in the near future.

Unless, of course, you're watching the next Bond flick.
