iPhone 3.0 To Match Palm Pre Features, But No MMS
Digg founder Kevin Rose shared his predictions during SXSW for what new features we'll see in iPhone 3.0. I wouldn't put so much stock in his predictions if he hadn't been exactly right in the past. I wouldn't put so much stock in his predictions if he hadn't been exactly right in the past. He says cut-and-paste is coming, but video and MMS will still be missing.Saturday at SXSW, Kevin Rose hosted a Diggnation broadcast. During that broadcast, he offered up some juicy rumors about what he expects to see in iPhone OS 3.0.
Keep in mind, Rose was exactly right about all the announcements made by Apple September 2008. Then, he predicted the revised iPod Nano, iPhone OS 2.1, and iTunes 8.0, among several others.

Still, it is with some skepticism that we have to approach his latest thoughts on what we'll see from Apple later this week. Here goes.
Rose says that iPhone 3.0 will "match the Palm Pre." He did not expound on that point, and it is pretty unclear. It really could mean anything. What I am hoping it means is that iPhone OS 3.0 will offer the same level of cross-platform integration and seamless contact management that the Pre does with is Synergy platform. In other words, Facebook contacts, Gmail contacts, Exchange contacts will all be merged into one master contact, but still searchable from those different databases. But, who knows what Rose really meant. My only thought is, if Apple can update the iPhone to match some of the Pre's iPhone-killing features, Palm may have a short-lived victory in the Pre. We'll see.
Other new features include the much-coveted cut-and-paste. Rose described it like this: Users will double-tap a word, then use their fingers to pinch "boundaries", and then they'll see a menu to cut, copy, or paste.
The bad news, however, is that according to Rose, iPhone 3.0 will still lack the ability to send/receive picture messages. Nor will it have the ability to capture video. These are two major features that the iPhone lacks, and that I am surprised have remained absent so long.
We won't have long to wait before we can see if Rose is right. Apple's iPhone 3.0 preview event is being held on Tuesday, March 17.
