Are You Breaking Text Etiquette? Is There Such A Thing?

Everyone approaches the way they use their mobile phone somewhat differently, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be some basic rules involved. That's especially true when it comes to using text messages for enterprise communications.

Everyone approaches the way they use their mobile phone somewhat differently, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be some basic rules involved. That's especially true when it comes to using text messages for enterprise communications.Predicto Mobile, which is an entertainment and news survey site, recently suggested a list of what not to do with your mobile phone and basically how to behave when sending SMS messages:

  1. Use Text abbreviations we all understand: No need for texting things like INUCOSM or RUUP4IT. There is no need to carry text abbreviation to English dictionary.
  2. Drunk Texting: Friends don't let friends text drunk, "just say no!" It's not your responsibility, but your duty to take away their phone.
  3. Texting during a face to face conversation: You're telling the other person that they aren't worth all your attention, someone else is more important.
  4. Paragraph Texting: Try to keep texts around 140 characters, just like a Twitter Tweet ;) Leave your dissertation for Grad School!
  5. Sending pictures/information via Text: Careful, it might not be just for the eyes of the person you are sending to, but many others who have no business seeing it.
  6. Text Noise Alerts: If you're a serial texter keep the alert to vibrate or silent (better yet) so you don't bother everyone around you with the robot-like singing of the "The Spice Girls".
Probably the most important item for mobile professionals on this entire list of suggestions is the one referencing drunk texting. Any professional who travels may find themselves at an industry event or dinner in which alcohol is consumed. Be careful, you may lose sales, a partnership or even your job if you go too far.

The other important one to be mindful of is texting when meeting with other professionals. It's one thing to text when talking to friends, it is quite another to ignore a client or business partner.

If you're not monitoring employee texting behavior, then perhaps you should. Furthermore, it would be wise for your company to explore guidelines for how SMS is used for business purposes.
