Sprint Insider Spills Dirt On The Pre

Despite the anticipation from smartphone fans, Palm and Sprint have kept mum about a lot of Pre details. We still don't know the price, release date, app store infrastructure, and a host of other things for a device that's supposed to launch within a few months. Fortunately, a rouge Sprint employee has a blog that leaks some more information.

Despite the anticipation from smartphone fans, Palm and Sprint have kept mum about a lot of Pre details. We still don't know the price, release date, app store infrastructure, and a host of other things for a device that's supposed to launch within a few months. Fortunately, a rouge Sprint employee has a blog that leaks some more information.Over at Inside Sprint Now an anonymous Sprint insider wrote an exhaustive FAQ on the Pre. This is by no means confirmed, and he doesn't dish the juicy stuff anyways, but it should satisfy those who can't get enough of the Pre and webOS.

One disappointing note is that the Touchstone charger won't come with the phone, as it has to be purchased separately. This is the cool charging station that uses magnets and inductive charging to power up your device just by placing it on top of the Touchstone. It can only be used for charging though, as a syncable version will likely come out down the road. I have a feeling this thing will die a slow death without being packaged in because rumors suggest it will hit the shelves with a $70 price tag. That's way too high for fancy charger, no matter how cool it looks.

An interesting tidbit is that Sprint and Palm will provide Pre users with a "Palm profile" for over-the-air software updates, and backups of contacts, calendars, and other information. This could be similar to what we're seeing with Microsoft's MyPhone online backup service, but it could also give Palm a way to deliver new Web-based services. Speaking of services, it looks like the Pre won't be able to use Sprint Music, Sprint PictureMail, or Sprint Digital Lounge.

So, there are no real earth-shattering revelations here, but it may tide you over until we get some official hard details on the smartphone. This appears to be a legitimate leak to me, and there's some good reading about how the gestures work, the Synergy feature, and a good description of the Cards interface.
