T-Mobile USA And HTC Have Sold 1 Million G1 Android Phones

The HTC G1 has passed an important milestone in the U.S. T-Mobile's recently released quarterly report shows that one million of the devices have been sold to customers in the U.S.

The G1 remains as the lone Android handset available to consumers in the U.S. and around the world. While some may be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the HTC Magic, one million people have taken to the G1 in the U.S. Shipping one million units is a clear indication that the phone is a success.

What's most interesting is that the G1 was one of the first phones to ship with support for T-Mobile USA's 3G network. According to the numbers, it accounts for fully two-thirds of all the 3G handsets sold by T-Mobile. T-Mobile has shipped about 1.5 million 3G-equipped phones in total.

To its credit, T-Mobile has expanded its 3G market footprint, though it still has a long way to go to catch up with competitors AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

As exciting as this number is, it pales in comparison to Apple's latest iPhone sales figures. According to AT&T and Apple, 1.6 million iPhones were sold/activated on AT&T's network in the U.S. during the first quarter. Apple sold a total of 3.8 million iPhones around the world during the first quarter alone. The G1 has been on sale since October 2008.

HTC has a long way to go to match Apple's numbers, but it still has every right to call the G1 a success. Let's hope the G1's successor is an even bigger hit, because Android needs the boost in visibility.
