iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 Rears Its Head

It has been barely more than a week since Apple distributed beta four for the iPhone, and now beta five has arrived. At first glance, it offers bug fixes and not a whole lot else.

That's nearly all that there is to be said about the new version of iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5, with two minor exceptions.

In previous betas, there was a settings screen to enable/disable MMS and a subject heading for SMS/MMS features. AT&T has not enabled MMS services for the iPhone yet, so it was a dead feature to begin with.

Some folks had figured out how to hack the beta so that MMS was enabled. Well, that is no longer possible. Number of affected users: Just about no one.

Other than that, YouTube is slightly improved on the iPhone. Now, instead of defaulting to the low-rez version of videos, YouTube delivers the higher-resolution version that was previously reserved for delivery via Wi-Fi. It is a noticeable improvement.

For now, that's all there is to report.
