Palm Eos Coming To Sprint?

Palm fans were in a tizzy yesterday, as news leaked out that the Eos would be the follow-up to the Pre. The device had a very slim design, nice specs, and would reportedly be available for AT&T. Now, reports are coming out that Sprint fans will be able to get an Eos later this year.

Phone News is reporting that there will be a CDMA version of the Eos that will potentially come out in the third quarter of this year. If you missed it, the Eos will have a BlackBerry-like form factor, 4 GB of storage, Bluetooth, assisted GPS, a 2.6-inch capacitive screen, and it will be powered by webOS. The Sprint version is expected to be identical to the GSM version except it will use EV-DO for its mobile broadband services.

While this is an unconfirmed tidbit, it makes a lot of sense and is in line with Palm's strategy. The company has been kept somewhat afloat by the Centro, which sold more than two million units due to a low price tag. It eventually found its way onto every major U.S. carrier, and it nabbed a lot of first-time smartphone buyers. The Eos is reportedly aiming for a $99 price tag, and could hook a lot of new smartphone users.

While all this speculation about the next generation of webOS devices is fun and all, I think there's growing impatience with Palm about the release of the Pre. I know companies always have to make a tough decision about how far in advance to announce cool new products, but Palm is teetering on the edge of upsetting its fan base. I think it would be an enormous mistake if they release the thing the day before WWDC, as rumored. This would give them only one real day at the top of the news heap, as Apple will likely unveil a new iPhone that could be a video powerhouse.
