File Sharing And SMS Powers Come To Skype 3.0 For Windows Mobile

The latest version of Skype for the Windows Mobile platform adds some nifty new features. Users will now be able to swap files back and forth, and can send text messages to other mobile phones directly from Skype.

Skype is no doubt a powerful tool for the business professional and world traveler. As it has moved from the PC to the smartphone, it's become even more useful -- especially at helping to keep cell phone bills under control when roaming overseas.

Skype has been great at adding new features and functionality over time. Today's release of version 3.0 for Windows Mobile should get Skype users plenty excited. It still offers free Skype-to-Skype calling, free instant messaging, and cheap(er) calls to regular cell phones and landlines.

The new features include the ability to pass files via Skype-to-Skype. Skype says it is "free to send spreadsheets, photos, music and other files." I couldn't find any language about limits to file sizes that are passed between Skype users, but I am sure there is one.

Skype 3.0 also lets users send SMS text messages from within the application to other mobile phones. Skype says this is "a great way to avoid roaming charges abroad if you text on Skype from a Wi-Fi zone." Text message fees can add up quickly when roaming abroad.

Skype 3.0 will work on pretty much every version of Windows Mobile that's out there, including 5.0, 6.0, and 6.1 (no word on future compatibility with WinMo 6.5).

Skype highly recommends that users connect via Wi-Fi rather than the cellular network. Data fees when roaming can be exorbitant.
