Google Fine-Tunes Gmail For Android And iPhone

Posted by Eric Zeman, Jun 10, 2009 03:48 PM

Just a month ago Google made some really nice changes to the browser-based version of Gmail for the Android and iPhone platforms. Today, it takes things a little bit further, by (you guessed it) speeding things up.

Speed is good. I like for things to be speedy. When it comes to performance of mobile phones, my guess is everyone has similar feelings. Today, Gmail for the iPhone and Android platform just got a wee bit faster.

Improvement numero uno is "faster address auto-completion. This means that as you begin typing the first few letters of your friend or colleague's name or email address, Gmail for mobile will quickly display possible contacts. We sped up this process by reusing previously fetched matches in subsequent searches." Nifty.

The second, and perhaps cooler, improvement is for Android devices in particular. Those Android handsets that have physical keyboards (such as the HTC G1), will now have access to keyboard shortcuts.

Gmail on Android now mirrors the desktop experience much better, and brings all the same keyboard shortcuts to the smartphone.

Good stuff.
