Verizon Wireless Bows Another World-Roaming Smartphone From HTC

Posted by Eric Zeman, Jun 25, 2009 10:31 AM

Today Verizon Wireless and HTC announced the Ozone, a Windows Mobile smartphone that works in the U.S. and around the world. Killer features include a slim waist line, camera and full QWERTY keyboard. All this can be yours for just $50.

Verizon Wireless is really ramping up the world roaming abilities of its smartphones. Many of the business-class devices it has announced in the last few months will work on its 3G network here in the U.S., as well as GSM-based networks overseas. The Ozone continues this trend.

It has EVDO Rev. A 3G and quad-band GSM/EDGE radios stuffed in there. It doesn't have radios that are compatible with foreign 3G networks though (unless that was left out of the press release). Other radios include GPS, Wi-Fi and stereo Bluetooth. I suppose by including Wi-Fi, it sort of makes up for the lack of foreign 3G support.

As for other features, the Ozone runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (non-touch version). Presumably, it can be updated to Windows Mobile 6.5 once it becomes available. It also has a 2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and video capture. It supports microSD cards up to 16GB, meaning there's plenty of room to store media and other files.

It will have full support for Microsoft Exchange, and comes with Microsoft Office Mobile, which allows users to view and edit Word and Excel files, and view PowerPoint presentations.

As for pricing, it costs a low, low $50 after rebate with new agreement. That's pretty cheap. It will be available for order starting June 29, and should be in retail stores on July 13.
