Today Novatel rolled out its latest rendition of the MiFi, the 2372. It covers all the major GSM-based mobile networks, including GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSPA. The MiFi 2372 takes things a bit further, however, with added storage capacity and a processor capable of running apps.Novatel's MiFi is a great tool. Essentially, it is a wireless modem that collects 3G signal from your network operator of choice. It is also a Wi-Fi hot spot, and will allow up to five separate devices to tether via Wi-Fi and access the Internet through the MiFi's 3G connection. It works great when colleagues need to share an Internet connection. It handles large uploads and downloads, as well as streaming video with no issues.

Verizon and Sprint have been selling a CDMA-EVDO version of the MiFi for several months. Now, it is AT&T and T-Mobile's turn.

The MiFi 2372 is compatible with the data networks of both AT&T and T-Mobile. It supports HSPA downloads of up to 7.2Mbps and uploads of up to 5.6Mbps (when those network speeds become available).

Perhaps what's most interesting about this new MiFi is that it has an on-board applications processor that can power software applications and media. The combination of internal (ROM) storage, up to 16GB of expandable microSD memory and on-board GPS capabilities mean the MiFi 2372 can run a variety of location-based apps, as well as store personal content such as music, video and pictures.

Novatel is encouraging enterprise developers to create applications and services for the MiFi. It already offers the APIs and SDK necessary for developers to get their feet wet.

No carriers have announced that they will sell the MiFi 2372, but it is likely that either AT&T or T-Mobile will pick it up at some point in the near future.
