Palm Pre Sales Reports Not Meshing
It's hard to know who to believe in the case of the Palm Pre. Sprint says the device has been a stellar seller. Some analysts agree, suggesting that as many as 300,000 had been sold by late June. A new report, however, says things aren't as rosy as Sprint wants us to believe. It's hard to know who to believe in the case of the Palm Pre. Sprint says the device has been a stellar seller. Some analysts agree, suggesting that as many as 300,000 had been sold by late June. A new report, however, says things aren't as rosy as Sprint wants us to believe. The first report came from Charter Equity Research analyst Edward Snyder. He guesstimated that Palm and Sprint had sold 300,000 units. He issued a report that said Palm was pumping out 15,000 new Pres per day, Sprint was struggling to meet demand, and he expected that the Pre would hit the million-units-sold mark within three months. Snyder derived this information by speaking to sources in the retail and manufacturing channels.
Yesterday, a new report became available. This one comes from wireless consultant iGR. iGR came by its numbers via the polling method. It contacted 50 different Sprint stores and asked them a series of questions about the Palm Pre. iGR reported:
None of the stores contacted had sold out of Pre and the majority had 'plenty' available. This compares with 8 percent of the stores contacted last week saying they had sold out of the Pre (down from 28 percent in Week 2 and 38 percent in Week 1). iGR's channel checks clearly show that Sprint is meeting the current demand for the device with the inventories available in the stores.iGR didn't offer a guess on how many Pres are being sold, but the figure would be something like "not nearly 300,000".
