IBM Takes $150M From Sun And HP Accounts In Q3

IBM says its Migration Factory service had a busy third quarter as it displaced Sun and Hewlett-Packard Unix servers and storage systems for 235 separate customers, accounting for $150 million in revenue for IBM. For the first nine months of the year, IBM said, the corresponding revenue total is $400 million.

Sun, stuck in lame-duck status as the European Union grandees dither over whether to allow Oracle to complete its acquisition of the company, was a particularly ripe target for IBM in the third quarter as 84 clients moved from Sun servers to IBM Power Systems.

For the year to date, IBM said it has displaced servers and storage systems at 400 Sun accounts and 200 HP accounts.

As a result, IBM said, it has increased its lead in Unix market share based on numbers from IDC that show the following: IBM's share is 41.4% following a second-quarter gain of 7.4 percentage points; Sun is second at 27.3%, down 4.4. points; and HP is third at 24.8%, down 1.6 points.

IBM said its third-quarter Migration Factory wins included companies in financial services, communications, public sector, healthcare, and retail.
