According to new numbers from comScore, the actual number of iPhone users has surpassed the number of all Windows Mobile users in the U.S. by a wide margin. RIM, however, still outnumbers both by a factor of two.Data from comScore shows that by the end of October, the number of active iPhone users in the U.S. reached 8.97 million. That's a pretty good number. Microsoft's installed, active user base stands at about 7.13 million. That means 1.84 million more people use the iPhone in the U.S. than all Windows Mobile devices combined.

Keep in mind, Windows Mobile is available on dozens of different handsets from pretty much every wireless network operator in the U.S. I have to wonder how Microsoft -- and its manufacturer partners -- feel about these new statistics. comScore attributes this change directly to the availability of the iPhone 3GS, which went on sale in July.

comScore has some numbers on the other smartphone platforms, too. RIM stands atop the smartphone user mountain when it comes to sheer numbers. BlackBerry addicts in the U.S. number about 14.96 million, which is more than double Microsoft's numbers and nearly double Apple's. I think RIM's current product portfolio is very strong, with devices such as the Storm2, Bold 9700, Tour, and 85XX series leading the way.

What's really interesting is where webOS, Android and Symbian stack up. According to comScore, Palm's webOS has about 2.84 million users. That means sales of the Palm Pre and Pixi combined are contributing to that amount. That's already one-third the number of all Windows Mobile users.

Unbelievably, comScore says there are just 1.04 million active users of Android. Can that be right? The number of Android handsets available in the U.S. has swelled to about 10 models, including the HTC G1, myTouch 3G, Hero and Eris; the Motorola CLIQ and DROID; and the Samsung Moment and Behold II. Are there really only a million people using Android handsets in the U.S. right now? I find that hard to believe.
