Google has scheduled a press conference at its Mountain View headquarters for Tuesday, January 5. The subject? Android. Google rarely calls together press conferences, so you can bet that whatever Google is preparing to announce, it's going to be pretty big. Is it finally going to give us the Nexus One details for which we've been longing?By the looks of things, Google is hoping to pull an Apple, circa 2007. The first day of CES in 2007, Apple held its own press conference and announced the iPhone. That single product announcement overshadowed the entire 2007 CES event. Love it or hate it, the iPhone has drastically hanged the mobile landscape.

This year, Google has scheduled a last-minute press conference just ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show, which officially kicks off January 7. The invitation to the event reads:

We know a lot about the Nexus One Android device, which has been fondled by nearly every blog under the sun. It sports some impressive specs. Will this surprise press conference finally deliver on all the hype? I expect at the very least we're going to learn more about the Nexus One, how and when it will be sold, and for how much. I also expect to see more information about future versions and capabilities of Android. With Android 2.1 more or less confirmed, there have to be more changes under the hood for Google's mobile operating system on the way.
