Apple Set The Bar Low For iTunes Movie Rentals, But Still Isn't Clearing It

By Mitch Wagner | 08:27 PM ET, Apr 15, 2008

When Apple launched iTunes movie rentals in January, it said it would have 1,000 movies available for rent by the end of February. That's not an impressive number -- Netflix offers 90 times as many. And Apple is falling far short of even that modest goal, according to Macworld.

Admins On The Hunt For Safari Downloads

By Tom LaSusa | 03:31 PM ET, Apr 7, 2008

When I launched iTunes over the weekend, I got the typical software update notification pop-up that I've come to expect every couple of weeks from Apple. As part of this update, however, there was a request to install the Safari browser -- which I had absolutely no interest in doing.

By Mitch Wagner | 02:43 PM ET, Apr 7, 2008

Daring Fireball's John Gruber has a fling with Firefox, but comes home to Safari. Despite Mac Gains, Windows Still Rules Enterprise Computing

By Mitch Wagner | 11:48 AM ET, Apr 1, 2008

Windows still nearly monopolized enterprise desktops in 2007, even though it lost some market share at the expense of Apple, according to a report by Forrester Research. Enterprise Windows market share dropped nearly 4%, but 95% of business users run Windows. And Apple market share tripled, but it's still just 4.2%, limited to enthusiasts and small workgroups.

Will The SDK Be The iPhone's Achilles' Heel?

By Mitch Wagner | 01:01 AM ET, Mar 10, 2008

Apple is betting its future in the smartphone market on a control-freak business model. Where other smartphone platforms let anybody build applications for them, Apple demands to be the gatekeeper for what goes on the iPhone, to protect users from inappropriate and dangerous content, and to generate additional revenue for itself. But developers might decide that Apple's business model is too much hassle and give their business to competitors instead. And Apple needs third-party developers to ensure the ongoing success of the iPhone.

Developers, Get To Work: Third-Party Apps We Need For The iPhone

By Mitch Wagner | 01:17 PM ET, Mar 3, 2008

The iPhone is a terrific smartphone, but it's got some glaring gaps in what it can do. Many of these gaps are baffling because they're not particularly glamorous -- capabilities that have been available for more than a decade on other PDAs and smartphones are unavailable on the iPhone today. I'm excited about the imminent availability of sanctioned third-party apps on the iPhone in part because I'm looking forward to the iPhone getting some basic capabilities that, frankly, should have been there all along.

Review: Leopard Grows Up With Mac OS X 10.5.2 Update

By Mitch Wagner | 06:02 PM ET, Feb 14, 2008

What's the main improvement in the three-day-old Mac OS X 10.5.2? Increased stability. With previous versions of Leopard, I had to force-quit a frozen application once or twice a day, but with 10.5.2, I haven't had to do it even once. "It just works" is once again a description of the Mac, not just wishful thinking, as it has been since Leopard shipped in October.

Firefox Makes A Liar Out Of Me

For Mac users traveling without a laptop, it's a cold and lonely world out there. Another Year, Another Bogus iTunes Antitrust Lawsuit

By Mitch Wagner | 08:51 PM ET, Jan 3, 2008

Maybe if enough lawyers sue Apple for violating monopoly laws with its iTunes/iPod service, eventually one of them will find a judge bonkers enough to agree. The latest lawsuit brings up variations of the same old arguments: Start with the assertion that Apple dominates the online media market, follow up with a lot of handwaving, conclude by saying that Apple should be required to write a big check. Be sure to pay the lawyers first.
