What does it mean when the nation's largest Internet Service Provider, like Comcast, buys one of the biggest content creators in the world, like NBC? For one thing, it means the already contentious issue of Net Neutrality is about to get even more heated. Hopefully, it will galvanize the FCC to create and implement Net Neutrality rules that protect the interests of other companies doing business on the Internet.

Five copies of "Behind the Cloud" have arrived at my desk, two intended for fellow IW staffers and three for me, an embarrassment of riches. It's Marc Benioff's book on how Salesforce.com was created and built into a successful company. I am reading it avidly… but some disclosures will apparently have to wait for the sequel.

Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com, finally got a little revenge. He wasn't in the least spiteful. Rather, he was only guilty of repeating something his former boss, Larry Ellison, said about software-as-a-service and cloud computing. An audience of cloud cognoscenti at Structure 09 loved the performance.

The IEEE-ISTO (International Standards and Technology Organization) held its first conference on product certification and conformance at their IEEE headquarters in New Jersey. The goal of the IEEE Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP) is to provide support to other IEEE standards groups, test labs, and industry groups in developing conformance tests. It’s a first step on a long road for the ICAP.

Last year Horizon Fuel Cell blew us away with a generator/charging device that used water to create electricity. My colleague, David Berlind, filed this blog, and this video on YouTube that not only produced more than 1.3 million views, but well over a hundred comments, many of them doubting the viability of the technology. This year, the company has not only created a final product, but showed off smaller, cleverer versions as well.

Our Innovation Stock Exchange had its genesis about two years ago as we brainstormed ways to supplement what we do as part of our daily work. Innovation is embedded in the Technology Information Group's culture; on a daily basis, our team members partner with Wells Fargo's other business lines to deliver innovative products for our customers, such as personalized ATMs, online banking services, and our Commercial Electronic Office portal for treasury management customers.

We had been hearing a lot about the Web transforming itself into this new interactive, mature medium of the future -- Web 2.0, Web 3.0, and even higher "versions" seem to dominate a fair amount of presentations and discussions in the industry. However, this seemed to have little bearing on practical application within our environment. While we were still trying to figure out how this "ideal new version" of the Internet could impact our applications, we had a problem brewing in our own backyard.

Rising health care costs are a conundrum for the Western world. Attempts to manage costs have been compared with squeezing a balloon -- you may constrain costs on one end, only to have the other end inflate. The solution Cigna is seeking is to take costs out of the health care system -- without compromising care.

Accenture's existing employees, and those we'll be hiring in the next five to 10 years, are accustomed to interacting, both on personal and professional levels, on Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikipedia, and other Web-based social networking and collaboration sites. Today's teenagers are a driving force behind communication vehicles such as texting, IMing, video chats with Web cams, and sending messages through Web-based social networking sites.
