Amazon Working on Ad-Supported Tablet and Phone
Category: Tablets, Smartphones
Citing "people involved in the discussions," the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon is working on a low-price tablet that will be supported by advertising.
The device would cost less than similar devices without the advertising. Amazon has employed a similar model with their basic Kindles: the basic $79 Kindle also includes advertising. The company used to sell similar models without advertising for more, but has simplified the product line since.
This new device would, presumably, be an Android tablet similar to the Amazon Kindle Fire. According to the source, Amazon has discussed how some versions of the new tablet would connect to the Internet only through Wi-Fi networks.
In July reports based on interviews with parts suppliers indicated that Amazon is also working on a smartphone.
Amazon has planned a media event next Thursday in Santa Monica, CA. It is possible that the new devices will be revealed there.
