QWERTY Keyboards Are Here To Stay

Comments | Serdar Yegulalp, BYTE | December 12, 2012 09:15 AM
pixel
Alternative keyboards are voodoo ergonomics. If the keyboard is going to be killed by anything, it'll be by the one holy grail of user interfaces: A direct neural connection between the user and the computer, with all of the fascinating and scary possibilities offered through such a system. The things I'm confident it's not going to be killed by are touchscreens — or, for that matter, other kinds of keyboards. Read More >>

Will iPads Get Intel CPUs or Macs Get ARM?

Comments | George Ou, BYTE | December 03, 2012 07:02 AM
pixel
Rumors have been spreading that Apple will shift their Macs to ARM processors and that Intel will make them. It's more likely that Apple and Intel will compromise and move higher-end systems, including the iPad, to Intel architectures. Moving the iPhone won't make as much sense. Read More >>

Are Windows 8 Sales Already Disappointing?

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | November 26, 2012 09:01 AM
pixel
It's way too early to declare Windows and Surface failures in the market, although it would be foolish to expect it to obviate Windows 7 any time soon, especially in business and double-especially on desktops. In the meantime, its job is to recover market share for Microsoft that has been lost to Apple iPads and Android tablets, and there's reason to believe it's doing that. Read More >>

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | November 26, 2012 07:33 AM

Microsoft's official support lifecycle for Surface with Windows RT hardware ends 4/11/2017. They have not yet announced the end of support for the Windows RT operating system on Surface and devices from Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and other OEMs, nor for Office Home and Student 2013 RT, which is bundled with Surface RT. Online backup services such as Carbonite, Acronis, IDrive and Mozy might be a bad deal for some users when compared to cloud storage services Box, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft Skydrive. The former usually just backs up files; the latter does backs up files and also gives you working access to them. Read More >>

They look a lot like Apple Stores, but Microsoft Stores sell Windows PCs and Surfaces and Xboxes. One is coming, if not to a mall near you, then some place near an Apple Store for sure. I popped in to my local Microsoft Store to take a Surface tablet for a spin. Read More >>

Crapware Lives On Windows 8

Comments | Serdar Yegulalp, BYTE | November 02, 2012 09:02 AM

Windows 8 is a clean slate in many ways. But one scourge that is not gone is crapware, a.k.a. bloatware, junkware, trialware, and stupid games that drag down the performance and experience of so many Windows PCs. We asked Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung and Lenovo what they preload on their Windows 8 systems. Some PCs are cleaner than others. The surprise? A Microsoft store might be the best place to buy. Microsoft: Windows 8 Ends Tablet Era

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | October 26, 2012 09:01 AM
pixel
With Windows 8, Surface, and the many OEM Windows 8 systems being released, Microsoft is attempting to redefine the personal computing market. In the new vision, tablets are PCs, and tablets that can't do the things PCs do--such as use a keyboard and mouse and multitask--are deficient. Windows 8 PCs and tablets can do these things; Android and the iPad cannot. If Microsoft can make the sale, then we are in store for an industry revolution. Read More >>
