A report by research firm Canalys says that revenues in the app business are dominated by game developers. We think the analysis is flawed, but it's also true that revenue opportunities are potentially more plentiful for games than other apps. Read More >>

A new Microsoft ad for Internet Explorer entitled "Do you know this guy?" shows an IE-hating, "IE Sucks"-tweeting, basement-dwelling techno-geek finally moved -- a little -- by the progress made by Microsoft's web browser. Read More >>

They look a lot like Apple Stores, but Microsoft Stores sell Windows PCs and Surfaces and Xboxes. One is coming, if not to a mall near you, then some place near an Apple Store for sure. I popped in to my local Microsoft Store to take a Surface tablet for a spin. Read More >>

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | November 05, 2012 11:22 AM

Apple might publicly scoff at Windows 8's combination of the PC and tablet into one platform, but it has to be at least thinking about whether it could and should do the same. The best approach would be to add touch features to OS X so that eventually it could replace iOS. Read More >>

Crapware Lives On Windows 8

Comments | Serdar Yegulalp, BYTE | November 02, 2012 09:02 AM

Windows 8 is a clean slate in many ways. But one scourge that is not gone is crapware, a.k.a. bloatware, junkware, trialware, and stupid games that drag down the performance and experience of so many Windows PCs. We asked Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung and Lenovo what they preload on their Windows 8 systems. Some PCs are cleaner than others. The surprise? A Microsoft store might be the best place to buy. Microsoft: Windows 8 Ends Tablet Era

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | October 26, 2012 09:01 AM
pixel
With Windows 8, Surface, and the many OEM Windows 8 systems being released, Microsoft is attempting to redefine the personal computing market. In the new vision, tablets are PCs, and tablets that can't do the things PCs do--such as use a keyboard and mouse and multitask--are deficient. Windows 8 PCs and tablets can do these things; Android and the iPad cannot. If Microsoft can make the sale, then we are in store for an industry revolution. Read More >>

Kindle Fire HD: The Mobile Set-Top Box

Comments | Serdar Yegulalp, BYTE | September 11, 2012 07:00 AM
pixel
Remember how set-top boxes were once presumed to be a major content vehicle of the future? In fact, the Kindle Fire HD is the set-top box of the future and Amazon is the cable company -- all one channel, but one where you can order up just about anything, from digital books to seasons of TV. It makes the aspirations of movies-on-demand and the Home Shopping Network seem downright tame in comparison. It does away not only with the set-top box, but the set itself. Read More >>

Meet the Nexus 7, the first Android tablet sold directly by Google and the first to run Android 4.1, a.k.a. Jelly Bean. The 7-inch tablet is priced like an ebook reader but offers a lot more. Its low price, big screen, and impressive performance might give Apple's iPod Touch and low-end iPad a run for the money, too. Don't completely count out Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 just yet, though.
