645 Pro for the iPhone has enough complexity to make professional photographers happy, even if it doesn't hold up to a mid-level DSLR back and decent prime lens. Read More >>

Nokia Lumia 810 A Win For T-Mobile

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | December 28, 2012 09:00 AM

The Nokia Lumia 810 is an excellent, if not top-of-the-line Windows Phone available on T-Mobile. It's reasonably priced, has a top-notch camera and intriguing software, including two music apps that stream free tunes, "augmented reality" to show you what points of interest are right in front of you, and Nokia's highly-regarded maps. It also has a screen that's clearly a class or two below the best ones on the market, such as the iPhone 5. If you want a better screen on a Windows Phone, choose the Nokia 920 instead. Read More >>

Online backup services such as Carbonite, Acronis, IDrive and Mozy might be a bad deal for some users when compared to cloud storage services Box, Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft Skydrive. The former usually just backs up files; the latter does backs up files and also gives you working access to them. Read More >>

HTC's Droid DNA for Verizon doesn't have much in the way of business-oriented features and might be too big for some hands, but it's powerful, well-built, graced with a gorgeous 1080p screen, and priced right. Read More >>

Has The iPhone Peaked?

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | September 13, 2012 11:49 AM

Prediction: Apple will sell every iPhone 5 it makes just on good execution and the strength of the brand. But the new phone already lags the competition in many areas, and it will be a year before the next major refresh. The iPhone 5 is a good incremental update, but Apple has left a big opening for Android and Windows Phone. Read More >>

There are no big surprises in the new iPhone, but many new and significant features. The screen is longer, but not wider, and movies and FaceTime look better thanks to improved HD support. Better audio and new earbuds round out the multimedia experience. The phone also supports LTE, and has a new--and incompatible--connector called Lightning. Read More >>

Kindle Fire HD: The Mobile Set-Top Box

Comments | Serdar Yegulalp, BYTE | September 11, 2012 07:00 AM

Remember how set-top boxes were once presumed to be a major content vehicle of the future? In fact, the Kindle Fire HD is the set-top box of the future and Amazon is the cable company -- all one channel, but one where you can order up just about anything, from digital books to seasons of TV. It makes the aspirations of movies-on-demand and the Home Shopping Network seem downright tame in comparison. It does away not only with the set-top box, but the set itself. Read More >>

Logitech ConferenceCam BCC950: Easy, Quality Videoconferencing

Comments | George Ou, BYTE | June 14, 2012 12:44 PM

With the exception of a few fixable design flaws, I am very pleased with the Logitech ConferenceCam BCC950. Pair it up with any 40+ inch 1080P HDTV with a VESA mounted fanless embedded computer running Skype and the solution could rival some business class "telepresence" solutions. Not only will you save a ton of money, you will be able to easily reach beyond your own corporate Intranet and avoid all the protocol incompatibilities plaguing the expensive telepresence systems.
