645 Pro for the iPhone has enough complexity to make professional photographers happy, even if it doesn't hold up to a mid-level DSLR back and decent prime lens. Read More >>

Logitech Keyboard and Camera for Cisco Jabber

Comments | George Ou, BYTE | February 01, 2013 07:00 AM

Enterprises implementing UC (Unified Communications) using Cisco Jabber will get some value out of the Logitech UC Solution for Cisco 725-C, but not it's not a complete client-end solution. The package bundles a slick keyboard designed for Jabber, a high-end webcam and, oddly, a mouse. Adding speakers and a headset would have made it more valuable. (This story has been updated to include Logitech's reaction.) Read More >>

Attack of the Telepresence Robots!

Comments | Rick Lehrbaum, BYTE | January 11, 2013 11:30 AM

A handful of innovative high-tech startups have emerged to create a new market: remote telepresence robots. These are videoconference devices, most of which roam an office independently under the control of a remote worker. Not only can you videoconference with remote workers, you can be there — in a creepy way — and go where you want. In this story we look at MantaroBot "TeleMe," VGo Communications "VGo," Anybots "QB," Suitable Technologies "Beam" and Revolve Robotics "Kubi." Read More >>

Nokia Lumia 810 A Win For T-Mobile

Comments | Larry Seltzer, BYTE | December 28, 2012 09:00 AM

The Nokia Lumia 810 is an excellent, if not top-of-the-line Windows Phone available on T-Mobile. It's reasonably priced, has a top-notch camera and intriguing software, including two music apps that stream free tunes, "augmented reality" to show you what points of interest are right in front of you, and Nokia's highly-regarded maps. It also has a screen that's clearly a class or two below the best ones on the market, such as the iPhone 5. If you want a better screen on a Windows Phone, choose the Nokia 920 instead. Read More >>

Google Maps On iPhone To The Rescue

Comments | Max Cherney, BYTE | December 14, 2012 09:31 AM

Google's Maps app is a welcome relief to Apple's blundering attempt at a Maps app. It goes toe-to-toe with Apple Maps in many respects, but doesn't include some of the really neat features that are in the Android and Web apps. If you loved the old Google Maps on your iPhone, download this new app immediately. But if, like me, you use an iPad much more often, this is a disappointing release. Read More >>

Here is how WiFi on major airlines works and what it would cost you. Probably. Airplane Wi-Fi pricing is such a mess that you often can't even know what the cost will be until you're on the plane. Gogo is the major provider, and we identified service offerings from Air Canada, Airtran, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Jet Blue, SouthWest Virgin America, United and US Air. The latest version of Gmail for the iPhone and iPad has an elegant new design -- closer to that of Google Plus -- and several new features. Some of the improvements merely bring it up-to-date with competitors. Others, such as search, should make you think about switching from Apple's Mail. Read More >>

Google Nexus 10: Dazzling Display, Great For Work & Play

I praised Google's first Nexus-branded Android tablet, the 7-inch Nexus 7 as the "best bang for the buck of any tablet available" in my last review. Last month, Google began shipping its first 10-inch Nexus, so I wondered, does it follow in the footsteps of its smaller sibling? Read More >>

Add Apps To Office 2013 on Windows 8/RT

Comments | Todd Ogasawara, BYTE | December 03, 2012 10:02 AM
pixel
Office 2013, especially the preview version of Office Home & Student 2013 RT that comes with the Microsoft Surface tablet, changes the model for writing add-on programs. There are now Office apps and an Office app section in the Windows Store. Many of these apps are free, but it's easy to see enterprise-oriented apps being developed and charged for. Microsoft's implementation of the apps in Office 2013 is clumsy in some ways, but promising. Read More >>
