CA Cuts 2Q Loss, While BMC Goes In The Red

Computer Associates cut its loss for its second quarter ended Sept. 30, blaming reluctant customers for its not doing better. CA's $52 million net loss was an 82% improvement over the same quarter a year ago. Revenue of $772 million was a 5% increase over the year-ago period.

BMC Software Inc. did well enough to increase its breadth of coverage in its second quarter with the acquisition of problem-ticketing vendor Remedy, says analyst Anne Skamarock at Enterprise Management Associates. But the purchase cost BMC in the near term: It took a loss of $53.3 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a profit of $10.1 million a year earlier, on revenue of $291.2 million, slightly less than a year ago.
