Career Counsel

May 19, 1998

I am a CPA in a rural part of Pennsylvania with a lot of years in various stages of computers, most of which were low-level positions. I have worked my way into a couple of jobs being the Novell network administrator along with my position as a Controller. I am caught between pursuing an accounting path or some path in computer science. I like the financial aspects of my job and I like the computer aspects, but am not sure what path will lead me to a well-paying chief financial officer position in a reputable company. After reviewing my options, my current thought is to obtain an MBA with a concentration in computer science through a long-distance learning program. Is this the best path?

If your goal is to be the CFO, why would you do your MBA with a concentration in computer science? If you truly want to be a CFO, rid yourself of the technology tasks you have today that are going to strip you of growing your financial depth and background. An MBA is a smart idea, but the concentration in computer science would fit appropriately only if your long term goals are to stay in technology.
