I am a geologist with a masters degree in geology, and have been working in the environmental field for seven years. I have embarked upon a new career path by enrolling in a masters program in computer science in the IT department of a well respected technical institute. I have minimal experience with SQL and administration of an Oracle database for environmental data. What course work or certifications should I pursue so that I will have a viable opportunity for employment when I complete my masters degree in approximately 18 months?

No particular course or certification will make or break your career path. The best suggestions would be to identify geological companies' IT departments which would view your understanding of the business and industry as an attraction and a trade-off to training you on technology.
