Career Counsel

June 2, 1998

I am 26 and am attending school at night to obtain a bachelor's degree in information systems. I am employed as a help-desk support associate. My goal is to become a network engineer. I am about three years away from obtaining my degree and I am contemplating taking a semester off to obtain my MSCE certification. I am thinking that with obtaining the certification, I could find a position as network administrator and continue with school. Do you think it's possible that I could find a network administrator's position without my degree? Do you think it is worth my while to go this route or just keep going to school?

You've got your head screwed on straight. Stay the course of continuing your education and you should secure a position as a Network administrator. There is absolutely no question that with your MSCE and your help-desk support experience, you'll be able to land the job you described. Don't give up on either; your strategy is dead on.

More Questions:
I don't seem to be advancing at all in the IS field, what areas should I work on?

What's the marketability for individulas coming out of the defense or armed forces?
