Career Counsel

June 30, 1998

For the past year or so, all the media has been talking about the dearth of technologists and the number of unfilled positions. But for project managers, like myself, the trend is just passing us by. I have actual experience doing prototypes in Visual Basic, have gone through the Oracle7.3 DBA training program, can manage Solaris servers, have worked with Windows NT, even did a stint as an assistant project manager on an effort to develop an N-tiered app using Visual Basic, Windows 95, Windows NT, MTS, MSMQ all using COM and DCOM, but I have gotten few nibbles. True, most of my experience has been as a government contractor or working with the government. Most of the companies and headhunters I have talked to say that pretty much ruins any chance for a job in the private sector. Am I washed up at the ripe old age of 43?

Who are you talking to? With the skills you mention, maybe a few companies will penalize you for coming from government, but the majority just want the experience. I think you're talking to the wrong people and maybe haven't taken the time to design your resumé to show the impact that you've brought about on your projects. Remember, the government is a business; structure your resumé around the bottom-line impact you've made.

More Questions:
I have 15+years of experience, but no degree, will this hurt my career in the future?

What can I do to increase my net worth to a company?
