Career Counsel

July 7, 1998

I'm looking for a CIO position with a medium-to-large-sized IT company. I've been in the IT field for the past 14 years and am now a technical planning manager with a large telecom software provider and outsourcing company. I've spent most of my career with this company in various positions, ranging from technical to management. My last assignment has been a two-year stint as part of a three-person management team to build a company from the ground up. Prior to this assignment, I was a development and contract manager, responsible for software delivery for five telecom companies. I am very people-oriented, customer- and finance-focused, and believe I have strong management and leadership skills. What do I do next, and am I on the right track?

You need to launch an aggressive and targeted search that draws on the experience you've had at your current company. The ideal opportunity will have you positioned in a small startup or midsize telecom company--an organization in which the company can draw not only on your technical expertise, but also on your business experience around telecommunications. You should be tracking potential competitors as well as new and emerging players in the industry, and staying very focused, with executive search professionals as your target audience. The best bet is to target a company that will be willing to pay you for both your technical and business expertise.

More Questions:
I'd like to move into a larger computer firm, but I don't have large-company experience, am I doomed?

What's the best way to gain further expertise in the management and reengineering of business processes?
