Career Counsel

July 7, 1998

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and I'm an IT specialist, building my expertise along the lines of Internet/intranet development and workflow/work-management solutions. I'm really interested in the management and reengineering of business processes and would like to gain further expertise in this area. What is the best way to do this, both in terms of a degree and in terms of a profession that will lead me there?

Without question, you need to begin an MBA program. Complementing an MBA with your current experience with internist and extraneous, you will be tugged into business process and key management initiatives; it's clearly the direction that most major organizations are moving into in terms of how to effectively use the electronic interface to encourage commerce with their customers. Your current company should appreciate your experience base; if they don't, people like myself are sure to come calling.

More Questions:
I'm looking for a CIO position with a medium-sized IT company, am I on the right track?

I'd like to move into a larger computer firm, but I don't have large-company experience, am I doomed?
