I am 35 and have been working for a small construction company for more than 10 years as a comptroller. The company is no longer growing and I have found myself in a comfortable but no longer challenging job. I also take care of a small network that has changed over the years from a Wang 2200 to Novell 2.1 LAN to Novell 3.12 and currently to Windows NT (6 to 10 nodes). I am looking into changing jobs, but want to concentrate on the computer side rather than business. Three years ago I became a CNE in Novell 3.12 and am currently thinking of attending classes to become certified as a MCP or MCSE. Having more of a business background, what kind of position should I be looking for? I certainly do not want to throw away the 10+ years of experience I have in the business world. Also, should I pursue certification as a MCP or MCSE or should I try to get a job with what I have after a little practice?

Technology seems to be your newfound passion, so I would recommend you deepen your knowledge base! The 10 years you put in won't go unnoticed, but without more depth in the IT industry, you'll lack the credibility to deliver solutions drawn up from experiences. The type of job I would recommend is as senior network analyst with a large company that can expose you to issues you have yet to face. Your business experience will help you with the users and long-term will push you into management positions. I also recommend certification; it shows real commitment and focus on career objectives.
