I've struggled the past few years with the desire to build a strong career vs. the need to "be
there" to see and help raise my young children. I have 12 years experience, primarily in
developing and implementing manufacturing/ERP systems. I have worked with one of the Big Six,
a small local systems integrator, and a large textile manufacturer. I currently work as a senior
business applications manager for a midsize manufacturer. I left two of these jobs due to the
extensive travel, and one due to the lack of challenge and career development opportunities
(which is what I'm concerned with in my current position). I would like to move into a sales and
marketing career with an IT supplier/consultancy, but I don't want to be on the road (overnight)
extensively. About 30% would be acceptable. Is this a completely unrealistic expectation? What
are the possibilities for someone with my skills (ERP systems and practices, project
management, BPCS & J.D. Edwards experience on the AS/400) to find a job that builds a strong
career without sacrificing my family?
Most sales roles require the travel commitment. However, unlike the Big Six,
many vendors have regionalized travel, making it within the corridor. Your
background is an attractive one, particularly to any of the ERP players in the
manufacturing arenas. A regional sales role may curb some of that travel, or at
least make it livable. FYI: I think the move from IT management to sales is excellent. Many of the
most successful sales people I've come across bring
similar backgrounds. You'll find that some vendors will make concessions on travel to attract
you to the organization.
