I am very interested in a career in IT, and I am currently enrolled in an information and systems analysis certificate program at the university extension. My question has to do with my marketability. I am worried about being "generic" when I graduate (not having a specific certification or knowing a certain language, for example). Is there something else I should be studying to make my skills more technical or specific so that I can get in the door right away and not be stuck in the support clerical route?

You've hinted at the right answer. A specific class specialization should be a must--like Java, Visual Basic, or Powerbuilder. Or you should look at any of the networking-type certificates or classes, such as Unix, Novell, or NT.

More Questions:
I would like to move into a sales and marketing career, but I don't want to be on the road extensively. What are my possibilities?

Should I make the switch from engineering application to business application?
