My knowledge of computers is basic HTML, Office 97, and Web browsing. I am retiring from the Navy next year and would like to use this final year to acquire computer education and certifications that will lead to employment to supplement my pension. I was considering A+ certification, then moving on to Unix system administration education or Microsoft CNE certification. Which track would you recommend? My education background is non-technical (an M.A. and M.P.H with an undergrad degree in business). I have not ruled out obtaining an MBA. Any suggestions?

Any or all of those certifications are possibilities. It matters less what track I recommend than what you want to do. You're entering the marketplace at a time when you can dictate what you want to do, following your passion and your interests, because all of the areas that you've indicated are extremely marketable and represent talent shortages. You really can't go wrong. Make the decision based on what you want to do, not what people are telling you to do.

More Questions:
I'd like to start a company that employs network engineers and places them in contracts with other companies. Where should I begin?

My goal is to become CIO for a Fortune 100 company, but my knowledge of ERP is not very strong. Should I take courses on ERP or focus on getting an MBA?
