I have less than a year experience as a director of operations for a small company. My new responsibilities include maintaining our phone system. My previous experience is in sales management with the same company. I would like to move more into a technical or computer field, but am wondering about the best approach. I have considered taking classes and then making a move to a new company at a lower level to get experience but am concerned that employers will look at my title and be unwilling to hire me (I would be willing to take a cut for a while). Are there companies willing to hire experienced managers and train them in technical areas? If not, can you give any advice on the best approach to make this change in careers?

Before you abandon ship, are there opportunities in your current company that will give you the exposure you're looking for? At this point in your career, it will be difficult to find a company willing to train you without a solid IT foundation or core technical experience and not take a significant pay cut. If you have exhausted all current possibilities, try to gain exposure to every facet of technology. That may mean taking a handful of courses coupled with continuous networking of your background to local companies. You may want to scale back your current title on your resumư as well as broaden your objective. Continue to add new skills that you acquire to your resumư and accompany it with a letter of intent. Going forward, maybe it means scheduling informational interviews to get your foot in the door.
