I've spent 25 years in the computer, network and information fields and have worked in a number of areas. I have performed as an engineer, manager, and director. The position that seems to elude me is a VP slot. As a woman, I wonder am I wasting my time, or should I settle for my director slot and be happy. My credentials are impeccable. They include a doctorate, masters, and bachelors degree all in scientific areas. What would you suggest I do to move forward, as it appears my present company has no room at the top.

You have a clear-cut focus on what your next role is, and I would agree that you have the credentials to move into a VP-level job. Don't let the discouragement of your current organization's unwillingness to move your career further slow you down. Stay as focused on your search as you are on the next logical step and conduct a targeted, well-thought-out search for a VP-level job or for a director-level job that offers you more responsibility than you may have today. Don't get so caught up on the title if the job itself offers you more personally, professionally, and financially.

More Questions:
Am I headed in the right direction with a goal of becoming director of IS?

Should I move away from my VP position in a startup company?
