I've been VP of a startup for nearly five years. Our endeavors have been successful to the extent our niche market will allow, however our current capitalization is badly in need of repair. I'm a 10% equity partner in the venture; I'm 35 with loads of technology experience and excellent people skills. Should I move on with the hope of much greener financial pastures but the loss of the equity opportunity?

If you are concerned about the company's success, you should definitely explore other opportunities. You're in a fortunate position today considering the exponential growth in technology. It may take patience to find the right opportunity, but if you have driven the success of your current company, you will be extremely marketable within the start-up arena. If you are looking to enter the already-established Fortune 500, you may be able to negotiate an equity play.

More Questions:
What can I do to advance into a VP position, it seems my company has no room at the top?

Am I headed in the right direction with a goal of becoming director of IS?
