I have a BSEE and five years experience as a test engineer. I've been with my current employer for three years. I've been promoted twice and have the title of Lead Test Engineer. As such, I have taken on the role of career development planner for the development group. I enjoy the management responsibility, but I also like staying involved in cutting-edge technology. More and more, I'm focusing on the bigger picture as a project manager. I expect a mid-level management position in the next two years. Our MIS department is currently staffing for a development group. I've been offered the position of software developer. I would be involved in enterprise resource management, Internet application development, C++, Java, Delphi, oracle, SQL, and SAS. I've been promised training in these areas, as much of this is new to me. Is this a positive career choice? What about the long term?

If you are interested in taking on this development role, it would be a positive career choice. ERP initiatives and Internet development skills added to your tool box will increase your marketability. If your company is willing to train you, it's a sound investment. Since you have held leadership roles in your current position, it's likely that in a new group, you will also be given added responsibilities in due time. So, I see the move as a "win-win." To answer your long-term question, if your company continues to invest in new technology, you will also continue to grow and maintain your niche in the marketplace.

What education should I pursue in order to advance my career--my MSCE certification or a degree in computer science?
