I'm a 34-year-old systems analyst employed by a major newsprint company. I have five years'
experience in the design and programming of C and Visual Basic applications, along with strong
database administrator skills. I have a two-year diploma in applied computer technology and a
three-year certificate in computer sciences from a leading university. My company is very
progressive towards training and expenses and I would like to solidify my education. My
business background is very weak. Should I pursue a stronger computer- based education or enter
into a business administration or commerce program as I anticipate
someday moving on.
Today's universities are geared toward complementing a business emphasis in just about every
functional discipline. So your concern about your weak academic base in business is unfounded.
With that in mind, your best bet is to put your head down and complete the remaining two years
in your computer science education, so that you have a bachelor's degree in computer
science--that will eliminate any future issues of employment. You also won't appear to be
unfocused by showing consistency to complete one area of concentration before moving on to
another. In the future, you could potentially look to an MBA to complement the undergraduate
degree.
